The EMD SD70M-2 is a 4,300-horsepower C-C DC traction road switcher introduced in 2004 as the DC traction counterpart to the AC traction SD70ACe — both models share the same 710G3C-T2 prime mover and Tier 2 emissions compliance, differing primarily in their traction motor technology. The DC traction configuration of the SD70M-2 offers lower initial cost and simpler maintenance compared to AC traction systems, making it an economical choice for railroads whose operations do not require the maximum adhesion capability of AC traction or whose existing maintenance infrastructure is optimized for DC electrical systems. At 4,300 horsepower distributed across six C-C axles, the SD70M-2 provides capable high-horsepower freight performance for the mainline applications that represent most Class I railroad freight work.

Union Pacific has been the primary customer for the SD70M-2, acquiring large numbers for general freight service across its western network where the locomotive's DC traction characteristics are well matched to the railroad's operating requirements. The SD70M-2 and SD70ACe are visually very similar — both share the contemporary EMD cab and hood styling — with traction motor type being the primary operational rather than visual distinction between them. In O Gauge, the SD70M-2 is a subject for contemporary Union Pacific modeling, representing current high-horsepower DC traction freight power on the largest railroad in North America.
